Round 5, Tyn Twyll, Llangollen, July 9th 2017.

The fifth round of the ATVs Only British Quad XC Championship at the old-school enduro venue of Tyn Twyll was always going to be a challenge for both rider and machine, with its varying terrain and long lap times. The weather was perfect on the day though, sunny with a light wind.

As usual, the youth classes kick-started the day and took to the start line in their separate classes; 250 youth, 250 hybrid and 100cc/125cc for the 90-minute race.

In the 250cc class Callum Brooks was on top form, and the one to beat. He posted the fastest lap of 13m:8s and took the win. Second place went to Will Dunlop, who was a few minutes behind – they were the only two youth riders to complete seven laps. Brandon Saunders had a good race and took the third-place spot. In the 250cc hybrid class, it was girl power all the way with Shelley Smart putting in an impressive ride, showing the boys how it's done - she was the clear winner. Josh Talents came home second with Josh Woodruff in third in his first-ever endure. They all completed six laps of the track.

The 100cc/125cc class was won by young James Maybury on his 125cc Raptor with Tomas Cai Evans second and Frank Marston third. These young riders rode brilliantly round the full circuit as did all the youth classes.

The mini quad 50cc and 90cc classes were next to line up for their 30-minute race on a shortened track which incorporated some nice climbs and descents. The 50cc group was great to watch with Owen Stephens out in front taking the win, and Owain Dafydd in second. Morgan Humphreys, the club’s youngest girl rider, secured the third-place spot on the podium and Braydon Grounds was fourth in his first-ever race. In the 90cc class the was some fierce competition but, after last season’s bad luck and a change of machine, Louie Holt was unstoppable and won his class by a clear lap. Harry Davenport was relentless in his pursuit of Louie but had to settle for second with new rider to the class Freddie 'Robbo' Robinson finishing third.

The final race of the day was the two-and-a-half-hour adult XC, and the temperature had risen. First off the line was the Expert + class, with Matty Morris taking the early lead. However, local lad Rhydian Owen took the overall win, followed by Paul Winrow, who also clocked up the fastest lap, with Morris third. The Expert class was dominated by an on-fire Iestyn Rowlands. Jamie Bone was next across the line and Martin Evison took a well-deserved third place.

The 4x4 class set off on their 1000cc machines. Steve Atkins was back after racing across the pond and he was the man to beat - young Sam Clowes tried his best and posted the fastest lap in the process. At the chequered flag, it was Atkins home in first with Clowes second and Simon Lang third.

It was all change in the clubman class with Jacob Woodward and Luke Richards out in front early on. Both suffered with machine issues though, leaving Bradley Johnson to take the lead on lap nine and the win. Moose Pittaway and Dale Roberts were second and third. Katie Hodgson took the fastest lap and the first-place trophy in the 4x4 lights class, with Derek Burns second and Craig McCormack in third. The sportsman category was the final class and won by Axel Bone, who has only this year moved up from the youth classes. Georgia Lent rode well for second place with Lewis Willey getting a strong third on the day .
