2017 Nora-MX Quad Championship, Round 6, Pontrilas, Hereford. Sunday 16th July 2017.


In his first competitive outing since representing his country at the QXDN last October, Luke Cooper returned with a bang at the sixth round of the action-packed Nora-MX Championship against a field of top quality quad racers.

Tom Day set the fastest Pro class lap in qualifying, for the second round in a row, with an impressive time of 2m:14s, just ahead of reigning British Quad Champion Mark McLernon.

In the opening moto, Dafydd Davies took his, now customary, holeshot with Belgium's Davino Bruneel close on his heels. By the end of lap one, McLernon had surged forward into second and engaged in battle with Davies. McLernon made his move on Davies with four laps to go but, a spirited surge from Cooper, saw a three-way battle to the line. McLernon held out for the win with Cooper second and Davies third.


Rain ahead of the second race made for slippery conditions, but that did not stop Scotland's Murray Graham from flying out of the gate taking, not just the holeshot, but a comfortable win. Unfortunately for Murray though, he had jumped the gate and, post-race, was relegated to sixth. The grateful beneficiary was 14 times British Champion Paul Winrow who, in a rare run out, mastered the conditions to take the race win.


Race three saw a start-to-finish two rider battle between Davies and Cooper. Davies grabbed the hole shot but there was nothing to separate these two as they battled it out lap after lap. Then disaster struck for Davies as he lost his seat with just over a lap to go. He held for a while but Cooper seized the opportunity to get past and take both race win, and overall for the day.

In the Championship standings, George Day extended his lead over Mark McLernon from four to 19 points.

Elsewhere;

In the 100cc Class Luke Berlyn returned to his one hundred per cent winning ways with three wins, each time over Robbie Wood in second place. Berlyn now leads the 100cc British Championship by some 54 points.

The 250cc British Championship started the day with just five points separating the top three riders. With the leader Josh Birch recovering from a wrist injury, the field was clear for Zak Orchard or Catrin Davies to capitalise. However, Davies lost her seat in race one and ended with an 11th and then Orchard had a machine problem in race two and had to settle for ninth. Orchard’s two seconds on the day where enough to give him second overall, and his nine-point gain on Birch puts him ahead in the championship by six points. Well worth a mention, was the overall win on the day by 13 year-old Marcus Sprason who had scored an impressively consistent third in each race.


A master class display in the Clubman group saw Ayrton Knowles on fire, on a track he claims not to like Three storming hole shots and three fine wins were a cracking day’s work for him. Sam Norris also showed fine form with two good seconds and a third. Championship leader Greg Thynne lost his grip with three unusual-for-him finishes of ninth, eighth and tenth. Rhydian Owen is the new championship leader with a 16-point advantage over Iestyn Rowlands.

The Masters class was won by Paul Winrow who had three close battles with championship leader Ed Davies. Davies was not helped by copying his son and daughter in losing his seat partway through race two. In the Out of the Box sub class Joe Williams took the three race wins, each time over Pete Bates.

Geoff Otway took the overall in the Masters Support class with two wins and a second. Matthew Kirk followed up two seconds with his first race win of the season in race three to take second overall.

Michael Haydon continued with his run of holeshots, with a further three in the Novice class. He then took the win on the day with a third and two wins.
