END OF THE TRACK FOR MURPHY?

April 13 2015.

British Championship leader Stefan Murphy's season is over after scans revealed he needs surgery for his injured right knee. MRIs show he has torn both his ACL and MCL ligaments, which require initial keyhole surgery in six weeks, when the swelling has receded, then reconstruction surgery in 12 weeks.

With a lengthy rehabilitation required after that, Murphy says he has no plans to race again this season and will also take a break from the sport altogether to focus on his expanding aviation detailing business, Up & Away.

"I could try and race again this year without the operation if I undergo extensive physio, but I then risk the danger of damaging the knee even further," said Murphy, who was a spectator at Grittenham on Sunday.

"I'm not prepared to do that. I love racing quads, but I need my knees for the rest of my life. It's time to focus on other things."

Former British Under 21 Champion Murphy, 24, from Oxfordshire, had started the season superbly after a winter racing in the French Sand Championship, leading both the British and the NORA-MX championships.

Murphy was also planning a major assault on this year's Pont de Vaux 12 Hour in a team with European Champion, Mike van Grinsven from Holland, and Sheldon Seal.
