FRENCH BLOWN AWAY

November 26 2015.

Storms forced the second round of the French Sand Championship at Loon Plage to be halted at the halfway mark last Saturday, leaving Bailey Edwards as the highest placed Brit in 11th spot.

Organisers put the red flag out soon after the hour mark, when wind and rain coming off the English Channel started blowing down fences and hordings making conditions unsafe.

The winner was French youngster Mathieu Vanstrazeele, who sometimes makes the trip to UK beach races. He was 14 seconds ahead of Jeremy Forestier and Keveen Rochereau. Pre-event favourite Jeremie Warnia started the race feeling unwell and finished sixth.

With Loon Plage close to Dunrkirk, several Brits made the short trip, with Margate winner Carl Bunce the next highest placed in 13th. Ant Barrett, Liam Garbett and Laurence Stopps all finished one lap down on the leaders in 45th, 65th and 77th respectively. There were 157 starters.

Sheldon Seal was front running, but only managed three laps before he crashed and was run over, hurting his knee. He may miss the next round on December the 5th as he was due to have an operation this week on an old wrist injury, which is unconnected to the Loon Plage crash.
