GEORGE RULES THE DAY AT NORA-MX ROUND 5 – RACE REPORT

June 14th, 2017.

2017 Nora-MX Quad Championship, Round 5, Mildenhall, Suffolk. Sunday 11th June 2017.

George Day overcame a pre-round 18-point deficit to Mark McLernon to storm through to lead the Nora-MX Pro Championship at a sun-drenched Mildenhall in Suffolk.

An impressive 118 riders across all groups, together with their support crews, travelled across the UK for Nora’s first-ever visit to Mildenhall and its first-class facilities. The fifth round proved to be an incident-free, tightl- run event by Nora’s (as ever) slick staff.

Prior to the racing itself, Day’s younger brother Tom actually set the fastest lap in qualifying, with a speedy time of 1m:41.8 s; brother George was second fastest.

In race one, George grabbed the holeshot and he soon built up a comfortable lead to cruise to victory. The battle for second place saw Paul Winrow, in a rare appearance, behind Dafydd Davies for much of the race, before showing the youngster his rear wheels in the latter stages of the moto.

On to the second race, and Scotland’s U21 star Murray Graham had a cracking start and claimed his first holeshot of the year. Graham held the lead for a while but was rapidly chased down by both Day brothers, with George finding his way through to take the win by 8.3 seconds over Graham, with Tom a further 2.4 seconds back in third.

Race three, and it was time for “sand king” Carl Bunce to make his mark. Bunce left all in his wake as he built up and maintained a massive lead, winning the race by 23.1 seconds over an on-form Oli Sansom in second place. Graham posted a strong third which gave him a well-deserved second place overall on the day.

The day was George’s though as, with two great wins and a fourth, he was the outright overall winner, overhauling a below-par Mark McLernon in the championship stakes.

Elsewhere, in the Nora-MX groups ...

Mister ‘one hundred per cent’ Luke Berlyn lost his first race of the season in the 100cc class when a nasty kicker in race one threw him from his quad, whilst comfortably leading at the start of lap two. He quickly recovered and showed true grit by recovering from dead last to get back to second. He then went on to win the next two races, each time ahead of Robbie Wood.

The 250cc Group is looking to be a three-way battle for the British Championship between Catrin Davies, Zak Orchard and Josh Birch. Orchard was quickest in qualifying, but by the most slender of margins – 0.01 seconds over Birch. Orchard took the first two wins, with Birch second on each occasion, and the day looked to be heading his way. But then disaster struck in race three as his tyre came off its rim early on, taking him down to sixth. Birch was more than happy to mop up and top off a good performance with the overall, after two seconds and a first. This is a class to watch as the club enters round six; just five points separate the top three riders in the championship standings.

Ayrton Knowles was showing blistering form in the Clubman Elite class with a hat-trick of holeshots. He took the first race by 8.2 seconds, but then it was all change in race two when Rhyds Owen overtook Knowles on the last lap to snatch the win by just 0.7 seconds. He followed this by winning the last race, to take the overall win on the day.

Normal service resumed in the Masters “A” with Ed Davies taking all three wins. The only real threat to the championship leader was Greg Fisher who led for a few laps in race two. Davies’ three holeshots also earned him three sets of Rip ‘n’ Roll goggles.

Geoff Otway kept his good run going in the Masters Support Class. Fastest in qualifying and three race wins were the order of the day for him.

In the Novice class, 2017 club newcomer Michael Haydon ruled. With three holeshots, one win and two seconds, he took the overall on the day.
