SANSOM IS ECOSSE HAT TRICK KING

January 18th, 2020.

In contrast to the floods and storms that raged all around, blue skies and strong sunshine greeted the competitors taking part in the penultimate round of the Rock Oil Michelin Ecosse XC Winter Series last Sunday, the 12th of January. There were some new faces in the quad line up, as well as one notable absence, Murray Graham, who was otherwise engaged celebrating his 21st birthday.

In a hat trick of hat tricks, Southerner Oli Sansom once again led the pack from start to finish. Clitheroe’s Ayrton Knowles had his best result of the series taking second on the day with a 5-2-2, putting him in a strong third overall in the series, only two points shy of second. Meanwhile Scotsman Mark Wilson was back on form, taking a 3-3-4 to finish third on the day and showing sheer determination on the final straight of the last moto. Fellow Scot Michael Brewis got fourth on the day, just managing to retain his runner up position in the series, after doing two races on a machine with suspension issues, resulting in a 2-6-5.

Young gun Robbie Wood did well to finish fifth on the day after parting company with his quad in the first race. But fifth and third places in the next two motos ensured Wood maintained his fourth overall in the series. Pastmaster Ricky Tordoff showed his mettle at the weekend and looked to be heading towards the podium after two fourth place finishes, but an electrical issue on moto three put paid to that, while Skegness regular Dwayne Barnes also showed good pace, rounding off the top six on the day and even leading moto three at one point, after a potentially controversial holeshot.

Round 3 overall.
1. Oli Sansom 135, 2. Ayrton Knowles 120, 3. Mark Wilson 118, 4. Michael Brewis 113, 5. Robbie Wood 110, 6. Dwayne Barnes 104.
