TEAM GB BIDS FOR GLORY

September 20th, 2018.

Harry Walker, George Callaway and Sheldon Seal head to Denmark this weekend in a bid to become the first team from Great Britain to win the Quad Cross of Nations title since its inception in 2009.

Walker and Seal are making their debut in the competition, whereas Callaway was of course part of Team GB back in 2016 when the event was held in France. The trio will take on teams from 20 other nations at the event which will be staged at the Slagelse track to the west of Copenhagen.

All three riders were due to cross the channel to France this week to get in practice and machine set-up time at sand tracks similar to the going at Slagelse.

USA, the defending Champions, are led by newly-crowned AMA champion Chad Wienen, who is joined again by Thomas Brown, with Jeffrey Rastrelli, who replaces Joel Hetrick, the one change to last year’s victorious team.

Last year’s second-place finishers France bring a much-changed team. The French federation has gone for the top three home riders in the French Elite Championship this year – Jeremie Warnia, Laurent Boissy and Sylvain Petit – who were third, fourth and fifth in the series respectively.

First and second in that Championship, Randy Naveaux of Belgium and Andrea Cesari Jnr of Italy have both been omitted from their nation’s teams!

Ireland, who finished a superb third at last year’s event at Cingoli in Italy, send Mark McLernon and Justin Reid again, with Leon Rogers coming back into the team in the place of Michael McAneney.

With the track being sandy, the Dutch team of Mike van Grinsven, Joe Maessen and Richardo Phoelich are many people’s each way bet for glory.

The event also sees the welcome return to quad racing of one of the world’s best riders, Latvia’s former European Champion, Edgars Mengelis (see separate story).

In addition to the USA there are two other “long haul” teams, in the form of Argentina and Canada. However, Australia, who finished an impressive sixth last year has not been able to make the expensive trip this year.

The most successful country in the competition is France, with three wins. Holland has two, while Belgium, Italy and the USA all have one.
