TRIPLE TOP FOR WALKER

November 14th, 2018.

Teenager Harry Walker brought his 2018 domestic season to a close last weekend with victory in the Skegness Beach race and in doing so he also completed a unique treble in the British quad racing calendar.

The ATVs R Us Zip Yamaha rider is the only rider in history to win the Weston Beach Race, the Barmouth Beach Race and Skegness in the same season. The 19-year-old is also the youngest rider to win each of the three events.

The remarkable run began last month at Weston. After twice being on the podium, (runner-up in 2017, third in 2015), Walker was determined to take his fine 2018 form into the UK’s single biggest quad event, and he needed to be at his best as the three-hour race developed into a gruelling battle with former Weston winners Carl Bunce and Stefan Murphy.

Walker ended the first lap in ninth spot and over a minute down on the leader, but a big two-hour stint and lap times quicker than his rivals ensured that he had a two-minute lead by his first fuel stop. A longer than planned fuel stop to also top up the coolant dropped him back down the pack before his last session, which included the race’s quickest lap, dragged him back to the front. He eventually won by three minutes. Only Walker, Bunce and Murphy ended on the same lap.

Barmouth, on the Welsh coast, is a different type of beach race, with five shorter motocross-style sprint races combining to give an overall winner. Not that the victor was ever really in doubt, with Walker producing a clean sweep of all five races. Walker’s younger brother Alfie also put in a fine display in the newly-introduced Youth Quad class, taking second overall.

It was then back to a two-hour enduro-style event for Skegness, where Walker put in another totally dominant display, winning by two clear laps after leading from the second lap. With youth riders a part of the main field, rather than as a separate race, Alfie again impressed finishing 18th in a field of 83 and the first youth rider home.

After a busy 2018 which saw Walker make multiple trips to Europe as well as racing in the UK, he now will take a break for a few weeks. Then in December he will contest round four of the highly-competitive French Sand Championship at in the surfing town of Hossegor, just north of Biarritz.
