BRITISH QUAD CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND 5 RACE REPORT

Round 5, Sunday July 23rd, Dean Moor, Cumbria

WALKER MAKES THE HEADLINES

Mark McLernon and Paul Holmes may have dominated the fifth round of the action-packed British Quad Championship at Dean Moor yesterday, but Harry Walker was the name on everyone’s lips.

Walker, Seal, Reid

The 18-year-old took his first-ever race win in the premier championship to become the youngest rider ever to do so. There was a change at the top of the championship too as McLernon retook the overlead by just one point over Holmes.

Carl Bunce took the holeshot in the first race, with McLernon and Holmes giving chase. Bunce held on for four laps before firstly, McLernon made his move to the front and shortly after, Holmes joined him to battle it out for the lead. Lap after lap the battle continued, until a McLernon mistake let Holmes through to take the win by 2.8 seconds. David Cowan came on strong in the latter stages of the race to take third ahead of Bunce. Wild card entrant Emma McQuaid also had a storming race, to grab seventh, holding off the trio of Murray Graham, Dafydd Davies and Sheldon Seal.

British Championship start

Race two, and Holmes on a mission, secured the holeshot over McLernon and Leon Rogers, and built up a strong lead. He was unstoppable and cruised to the win by 11.5 seconds over McLernon, with Rogers in third. Walker was running in third until a puncture stopped him in his tracks.

On to the final race and, with Holmes on fire in race two, the expectation was for him to increase his Championship lead over McLernon which, prior to the start of race three, stood at 13 points. Taking his second holeshot of the day, Holmes was flying with Walker and wild card Sheldon Seal also storming off the line. Then disaster struck for Holmes as smoke from an oil leak from his rear shock saw him fade and finish the race a lowly 15th. Walker was quick to seize his chance and, in a master class of quad racing, took over the lead from Holmes and then calmly kept all riders out of range for the next ten laps. A 7-8 second buffer was more than enough for him to bag a memorable win. Justin Reid was 3.7 seconds behind in second and McLernon third. McLernon took the overall win on the day and regained the championship lead.
