The opening round of the Nora Motorsport ATVs Only British XC Championship finally got underway at KORC Sport in Gainsborough last weekend.

The weather at the weekend played a huge factor with proceedings as the amount of rain that fell on Saturday was nearly enough to bring the event to a standstill. However, KORC is a superb all-weather venue and, after some very, very early morning hard work by the track team, it was all systems go on race day, and the riders were ready to tackle a course over 7.5km long with every type of enduro terrain in the mix.

James Maybury - Youth 250 winner

The Youth race kickstarted the day. The riders faced a one-and-a-half-hour race in the toughest conditions of the day. Ollie Pinder took his maiden victory in the 250cc Hybrid class, while James Maybury took control of the 250cc Air Cooled class. He had a commanding lead from the end of lap one and took the win ahead of Louie Holt and second and Cai Evans in third. They all completed an arduous six laps. It was an unfortunate day for the two 125cc riders though, as both Ronnie Burnett and Owen Stephens registered a DNF.

The MINI Quad race, for riders aged five to nine years, took place over a shortened course with a duration of 30 minutes. It proved to be a challenging 30 minutes in the tricky muddy conditions and the youngsters dug deep. Joseph Hayes won the 100cc class and Oliver Wilshere too the honours in the 90cc category aboard his Yamaha. William Pinder rode hard in the 50cc group to cross the line in first place. All mini riders did brilliantly just to finish.

New-to-DQR, Mini rider Jaxon-Blu Butcher - third in 50cc

A rider briefing was held prior to the start of the Adult race and the club paid tribute to long-standing member Derek Burns who tragically passed away, doing what he loved, a few weeks ago. Clerk of the Course Ashley Holt made a short speech and the paddock fell silent for a minute’s silence in honour of Derek.

The Adults had a far better track in the afternoon and the Expert Plus class saw Jamie Morgan taking an early lead over the rest of the pack. Morgan settled in and took the win and the overall on the day. Jonny Kelly from Ireland, making his DQR debut, was second and Joshua Waring third.

Jake Best stepped up from Sportsman to Expert and took his debut win in the class with Tom Stevens in second. Bradley Johnson, back racing after taking last season off, returned in fine form to take the Clubman win ahead of Daniel Evans and Paul Robinson. Over in the Sportsman sector, Andy Price was first with Tom Bishop second and Kevin Wilcock third.

Simon David - 4x4 Expert winner

Neil Martin on his return to DQR action was the 4x4 Light’s winner, with Stuart Mowbray runner up.
In the 4x4 Clubman class, Harry Stevens, having won the Lights championship in 2020, put in a solid 12 laps to take the win with Laura Linton second, and Joe Bacon rounding out the podium. The 4x4 Expert class was as competitive as always, Simon David took the win and second overall. At the flag, Graham Guy was second and Kevin Watson was third.

It was a fitting tribute that both Stevens and David won their respective 4x4 classes on quads which had the suspension tuned and developed by Derek Burns, who was an outstanding engineer.

The DQR club is thankful to the team from EMS for their actions on the day after a rider had an unfortunate off in the opening laps of the Adult race. Events without such as these cannot run without the experienced team of medics that are on hand trackside and the support of the NHS doctors and medics from the Air Ambulance. The DQR crew send best wishes to John Page and his family, and hope he has a speedy recovery.

Round 2 of the DQR British XC Championship will be held on the 6th of June at Seals Hill, Chacombe, OX17 2BH
