SANSOM DRAWS FIRST QUAD CHAMPIONSHIP BLOOD

September 7th, 2021.

The final two rounds of the 2021 NETT Quad Championship saw the quads and sidecars head to Duns Motocross track in the Scottish Borders.

There was some initial doubt as to whether or not the event could be held at Duns after the fatality at the circuit the preceding weekend. However, following consultations with the relevant authorities, and with the blessing of the parents of young motocross star Jude Morris, the meeting went ahead as planned. The club organised an emotional start-line rev-up for #101, in which all quads and sidecars participated.

Team GB QXoN team-mates Oli Sansom and Dafydd Davies were in the Championship mix, as was Team Ireland’s Mark McLernon. Harry Walker was unable to make the trip north as he is still struggling with the aftermath of Covid-19, which both he and his brother Alfie contracted a few weeks’ ago.

While McLernon won the championship overall on Saturday, and young-gun Robbie Wood took the winning points on Sunday, the weekend was owned by the newly-crowned NETT champ, Oli Sansom.

Sansom had his sights set on winning this championship at the start of the 2021 season, and his long days and nights training and putting in the workshop hours finally paid off when he won the series with two races in hand. “It’s been a great year,” said Sansom. “I put in a lot of work and made sacrifices along the way, but it feels awesome to have that effort and determination pay off.

“I went into the weekend with a 75-point lead and knew that all I had to do was create points to win. I rode carefully on Saturday and then on Sunday I knew I only had to finish one moto to win the series. I had a great ride with Mark McLernon and Murray Graham in the championship winning moto, taking the holeshot and swapping first place twice until Mark made a great pass and took a well-deserved win.

“When it was confirmed that I had won the championship with two races to go, I decided to pay attention to my heel injury and sit out the final two motos. I was mindful that there is still the ACU British Championship final coming up, in which I’m running third, and of course I’m part of the Team GB crew for the QXoN in France next month.

“Huge thanks to my team, family, friends and sponsors for their continued support.”
