TREKKING WITH YAMAHA - DRUMCLOG'S RELIABLE ATV FLEET

April 25th, 2025.

Drumclog Off-Road Centre has been a haven for off-road enthusiasts for a quarter of a century. Originally established by local landowners and farmers, this expansive 1200-acre site, nestled between Glasgow and Edinburgh, has evolved into a premier destination for adventure seekers of all levels.

"We have something for everyone," says Grant Chalmers, who has been instrumental in transforming Drumclog into a thriving business. "Whether it's your first time on an ATV or you're a seasoned rider, we tailor our experiences to suit you." Its quad treks, designed for those 16 and over due to the size of the ATVs and the challenging terrain, offer a unique opportunity to explore the diverse landscape.

Drumclog's appeal extends beyond quad trekking. "It used to be a pay-and-play setup," Grant explains, "where you'd get a key from the farmer and head out on your own. But we've transformed it into a full-fledged off-road centre with all the facilities and safety for visitors."

Amenities include toilets, showers, camping facilities, and food services. Drumclog offers day and weekend passes, host events, and provide dedicated kids' activities during school holidays. "We're even in the process of adding camping pods to further enhance the visitor experience," Grant adds.

The sheer size and variety of Drumclog's terrain is a major draw. "It's one of the largest areas of land in the UK still available for off-roading," Grant emphasises. With woodland areas, steep inclines and declines, river crossings, and plenty of mud and bogs, it's a true off-road paradise. The facility offers camping from March to October and day passes year-round, catering to a wide range of interests and skill levels. Beginners have dedicated practice areas, while more experienced riders can tackle enduro tracks and mud racing courses.

"Our quad trekking experiences are always tailored to the customer," Grant explains. "We consider their experience, ability level, and what they want to achieve during the trek." For these treks, Drumclog exclusively uses Yamaha Kodiak 450 EPS ATVs, with instructors leading the way on Grizzly 700 EPS models.

The decision to switch to a full Yamaha fleet was driven by several factors. "Dealing with Allan and the team at Stirlings Powersports is so easy," Grant says. "It's a great local dealer providing excellent support. The team there understand our setup, the terrain we deal with, and they've really embraced our ethos." The reliability of the Yamaha ATVs is another key advantage. "The CVT Ultramatic transmission makes them incredibly user-friendly," Grant notes. "And the 4WD features and standard winches are invaluable on our terrain. They're also incredibly easy to maintain.

"The Grizzly 700 lead bikes provide instructors with extra power and weight when needed, ensuring the safety and comfort of the trekkers. "I ride the Grizzly 700 mostly, and I love it!" Grant enthuses. "It handles well, has great suspension, and the brakes last much longer than our previous bikes. It's got plenty of power and the winches are a lifesaver in tricky situations."

The team also have a Wolverine RMAX 4 within the fleet, which Grant also praises. "It's easily the best 4x4 off-road side-by-side I've ever used. The setup, build quality, and suspension are amazing. And being a four-seater, I can transport customers with me.

"Customers riding the Kodiak 450s are equally impressed. "They find them easy to control, comfortable, and safe on various terrains," Grant explains. "We appreciate that they have enough power without being overwhelming, making them perfect for beginners. The Kodiak 450 is the ideal vehicle for our trekking experiences.

"Looking to the future, Drumclog plans to strengthen its relationship with Yamaha. "We want to progress our partnership," Grant says. "We value the products and the support. We're even looking to introduce RMAX side-by-sides to our trekking offerings."

Ultimately, Grant hopes that the quality and performance of the Yamaha ATVs will leave a lasting impression on visitors, inspiring them to consider Yamaha for their own off-road adventures.
